The A-bombed Camphor Tree — A Living Symbol of Hiroshima’s Rebirth
A Silent Witness by Hiroshima Castle Moat
Standing quietly on the northern edge of Hiroshima Castle near the northwest side of RCC Broadcasting this camphor tree has watched over the city for generations.
Only 1,120 meters from the hypocenter, the tree was blown apart by the blast and scorched by fire and heat, yet it sprouted new branches and leaves again.
Its survival has become an enduring symbol of Hiroshima’s rebirth.

Scars and Signs of Regeneration
Deep burn marks and fractures still remain on its trunk, reportedly caused by fires from the former Hiroshima Army Cadet School nearby.
Despite the damage, the tree continues to live — new shoots sprout from its trunk, and its uneven crown reflects resilience.
Though its surface shows recovery through natural healing, internal hollows may still be developing, emphasizing the need for periodic professional diagnosis.
At the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
Before visiting this tree, I stopped by the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum
There, the reality of war unfolds — charred clothing, melted glass bottles, photographs of suffering.
Standing before them, I felt a deep, tightening ache in my chest.
And yet, the people of Hiroshima rose from the ruins, rebuilding their city from ashes.
The peace and prosperity we enjoy today rest upon immeasurable sacrifices.
Just as this camphor tree regrew its branches, Hiroshima too revived — not just as a city, but as a message entrusted to future generations.
The Tree That Tells the Story of Peace
The A-bombed camphor tree remains a living testament to Hiroshima’s destruction and renewal.
Eighty years after the bombing, it continues to thrive, reminding us to live with gratitude and purpose —
to honor the resilience of those who came before us, and to protect the peace they built with their courage.
