Karikomi-basami: Using Japanese Hedge Shears

Karikomi-basami are two-handed hedge shears with two long handles and long blades, used to trim the surface of a hedge or a rounded shrub in one sweep. This article shows, with illustrations, how to hold them, how to cut deep in the blade, how to clip hedges and rounded shrubs, and what clipping does to the plant, drawing on public pruning documents and a gardener’s field experience.

This is the tenth article in our series on the pruning techniques of Japanese gardeners (niwashi, ueki-ya). The previous article covered ueki-basami and sentei-basami. This one is about a tool with a different job: it shapes a surface, rather than choosing branches one at a time.

Karikomi-basami: two-handed shears that make a surface

Karikomi-basami have two long handles and two long, straight, narrow blades joined by a pivot screw. Wooden handles have long been used. The long blades trim the tips of many twigs in a single stroke.

Public specifications also separate clipping from choosing branches one by one. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s street-tree standard specification defines clipping (karikomi) as cutting back a surface of the crown of medium and low shrubs. The City of Yokohama’s specification says to shape the crown with hedge shears or a hedge trimmer, removing overcrowded and dead branches to secure ventilation and light. Clipping is both for appearance and for light and air.

Karikomi-basami are used differently from ueki-basami and sentei-basami, which choose single branches (see our article on ueki-basami and sentei-basami). How clipping differs from thinning is covered below.

Grip and stance: move with your whole body

Hold hedge shears near the ends of the handles with both hands. Holding mid-handle weakens the leverage and tempts you to work with the wrists. Hold the ends, keep one hand fixed, and open and close the blades with the other hand.

From our experience in the field, tiredness in clipping comes from moving the blades with the wrists alone. Keep the elbows lightly in, stand with feet shoulder-width apart, and move your body along with the arms. Do not open the blades wide; take a small amount each time and keep the blades parallel to the surface as you advance.

From our experience, the fixed hand and the moving hand have different jobs, so the grip position and the way of holding differ as well. The fixed hand keeps the direction and height of the shears and holds the blades parallel to the surface. The moving hand takes the opening and closing. Changing the grip to suit each hand’s job keeps the blades on the surface and the movement steady.

Because the work goes on for a long time, wear gloves and do not grip too hard. Gloves also keep your fingers from being caught when the blades close. Over-gripping makes the blade tips waver and leaves steps and unevenness in the surface.

Using the blades: cut deep, advance in small steps

Shears are a lever, and the part near the pivot cuts with more force than the tips. From our experience, hedge shears work the same way: bring the twigs deep into the blades and the cuts come out even with little force. Pinching twigs with the tips lets them slip away and leaves uncut pieces.

Hedge shears are for cutting soft new growth. Some retail specification sheets give the cutting capacity of lightweight hedge shears as about 6 mm in diameter of green wood (it varies by model). As a guide in our own work, new shoots thinner than a pencil are cut with hedge shears; anything thicker goes to secateurs or a saw. Twisting thick branches in hedge shears dulls the blades and splits the cut.

Because hedge shears trim twig tips, they do not choose a bud to cut back to. Saitama Prefecture’s street-tree pruning manual treats clipping with hedge shears, trimming the tips of lateral branches, as a kind of heading cut. Leaving much branch beyond a bud can make that part die back, so from our experience, at each clipping we move the blade a little outward and cut just beyond the previous cut.

Clipping a hedge: a string line, and from top to bottom

When clipping a hedge, first fix the height and line of the surface. From our experience, stakes at both ends with a string pulled between them let you clip along that line, and the top stays level even on a long hedge. For a short hedge without a string, step back and check the line by eye as you go.

The order is the top first, then the sides, working from top to bottom. From our experience, clipping from the top means fallen clippings do not land on faces already done, and one sweep at the end is enough.

From our experience, the corners and ends of a hedge are where uncut twigs are most often left, because the blade tips reach them poorly and twigs slip away. After the faces are done, finish the corners and ends last, turning the blades as you check them. When the lines where faces meet run true, the whole hedge looks crisp.

Clip a hedge narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. Clemson University’s guidance also says to clip a hedge so the base is wider than the top. If the base is narrow, shade from the upper growth keeps light from the lower branches, the lower leaves and branches drop, and the foot of the hedge becomes sparse. The Tokyo specification likewise says that, where the skirt branches are to be kept, the upper branches are clipped harder and the lower ones lighter.

Clipping a rounded shrub: following the curve

Clipping a tamamono (a shrub shaped into a round form) moves differently from a flat face. Follow the round surface with the blades in an arc. Going back and forth over the same place makes a dent, so move in one chosen direction in a flowing motion.

From our experience, do not try to shape a tamamono all at once: clip half as seen from above, then walk around to the other side and match the same form. Working around it, finish a little at a time so the whole swell is even. From our experience, the angle of the blades changes each time the height of your hands changes, so move your feet and keep the blades parallel to the surface you are clipping.

What clipping does to the plant: look inside the surface

Keep clipping with hedge shears and the tips branch into many twigs, making the surface dense. Clemson’s material also says that repeated heading produces dense growth near the outer canopy, and less light reaches the interior. A hedge green on the surface but with few leaves inside, a dark middle and dead branches showing is a common sight.

The remedy is to combine clipping with thinning. The Tokyo specification calls for medium thinning (naka-sukashi) where branches are crowded, and for clipping the twigs around the crown while forming its outline. In a gardener’s way of thinking, you shape the outer surface with hedge shears and pull out the crowded branches inside with ueki-basami or sentei-basami. We explain the idea of thinning in our article on sukashi.

Timing matters too. Clemson recommends clipping hedges while the new growth is still green and soft. Flowering shrubs are clipped after flowering. Yokohama’s specification also says to pay attention to the period when flower buds form. Timing and the plant’s response are also touched on in our article on pruning to a purpose.

The craftsman’s hand: step back and look at the surface

Clipping shows its result at a glance. Among craftsmen it is said that you stop several times during the work and step back to look at the surface. Up close, with the blades moving, the surface looks even; from a distance the differences in height and the dents appear.

From our experience, well-sharpened hedge shears cut with an even sound and clean ends. Among craftsmen it is said that a veteran’s clipping has a steady rhythm, an even run of blade sounds that is pleasant to listen to. Hedge shears that have lost their edge tear leaves and new shoots, so the cuts turn brown and the clipped face looks brownish a few days later. The care of the tool shows in the color of the finish.

From our experience, gather the clippings at your feet before judging the finish, because clippings left under the face make its height and line harder to see.

Among craftsmen, not leaving traces of clipping is regarded as skill. A good clipped surface shows no streaks of the blade even just after cutting, and once new leaves come, you cannot tell where it was clipped. The hand work of stroking the same surface over and over to make a clean face has a different character from machine clipping.

Frequently Asked Questions (Q&A)

Q1. What are karikomi-basami?

A. Two-handed shears with two long handles and two long, straight, narrow blades joined by a pivot screw. They suit trimming the surface of a hedge or rounded shrub widely in one stroke, a different role from ueki-basami and sentei-basami, which choose single branches.

Q2. How thick a branch can hedge shears cut?

A. They are for soft new shoots. Some retail specification sheets give about 6 mm in diameter of green wood for lightweight hedge shears (it varies by model). As a guide in our own work, shoots thinner than a pencil; thicker branches go to secateurs or a saw.

Q3. What shape should a hedge be clipped to?

A. Narrower at the top and wider at the bottom. If the base is narrow, shade from the upper growth keeps light from the lower branches, and the lower leaves and branches drop, leaving the foot of the hedge sparse.

Q4. What happens to a hedge that is only clipped, year after year?

A. The surface grows dense with twigs, less light reaches the inside, and the inner branches carry fewer leaves. Combining clipping with medium thinning, pulling out crowded inner branches, lets light in.

Q5. When should I clip?

A. As a guide, clip hedges while the new growth is still green and soft. Clip flowering shrubs after flowering, and avoid the period when flower buds are forming. Timing depends on the species and the purpose.
