【Introduction】

This red pine has been an important presence, watching over the garden for many years. Since 2024, we have carried out diagnosis and recovery planning.
In this article, we will share how the tree, once weakened by pests, disease, and excessive pruning, has been steadily recovering through careful treatment and balanced management.

Diagnosis in 2024

This red pine has been cherished by the client for a long time. When inspected in 2024, its foliage appeared dull, and dieback was observed on the tips of small branches.

A professional laboratory test revealed that the main cause was needle cast disease (a disease causing spots on leaves and premature defoliation). In addition, infestations of spider mites (tiny mites that suck nutrients from the leaves) and pine bast scale insects (which hide at the base of needles and branches to suck sap) were confirmed.

These pests weakened the tree, making it more vulnerable to disease. Furthermore, excessive pruning (cutting back too much) also reduced the tree’s natural resistance.

Recovery Plan for 2025

Our guiding principle was “do not interfere with the tree’s natural recovery power.”

Spider mites: Controlled with carefully timed pesticide applications to prevent population growth.

Scale insects: Thorough spraying ensured the pesticide reached hidden areas.

Needle cast disease: Applied fungicides at the right timing, while removing and disposing of fallen leaves.

Pruning was limited to the bare minimum, shaping the tree without causing stress. Soil condition was also improved, using both liquid fertilizer for quick effect and slow-release fertilizer for long-term nutrition.

Signs of Recovery (September 2025 Diagnosis)

The follow-up inspection in September 2025 revealed clear signs of improvement:

New shoots regained vigor, with more leaves.

Foliage color improved to a healthy deep green.

Pest damage was limited, with spider mite populations greatly reduced.

Scale insects were barely present, and no secondary damage was observed.

Needle cast disease was suppressed, thanks to proper sanitation and treatment.

Canopy density improved, with better airflow and sunlight exposure.

Soil condition stabilized, balancing water retention and drainage.

Future Management Recommendations

Since trees are affected by seasonal and environmental changes, we recommend a management approach of “not overdoing it.”

Monitor pests early: Especially in hot and dry seasons, treat lightly only when needed.

Prune moderately: Thin out crowded areas to allow light and air circulation.

Protect soil and roots: Apply only light organic amendments, avoid excessive digging or replacement.

Keep records: Take photos in early summer and early autumn, and inspect after extreme weather.

Conclusion

In 2024, the tree was suffering from diseases, pests, and excessive human intervention.
Through balanced care — minimal pruning, well-timed pest control, soil improvement, and careful fertilization — the tree has regained its vitality by September 2025.

Moving forward, by allowing the tree to rely on its natural resilience, we can expect it to remain healthy and strong for many years to come.

【Introduction】
